North West Legal Support Trust

The North West Legal Support Trust (NWLST) is a grant-making charity that has been established to support legal charities in the North West. The Trust is a registered charity, number 1131259. It will make grants to enable the provision of free legal advice to members of the public who would otherwise be disadvantaged, and will also support other charitable work that promotes access to justice.

The Trust is accepting small grant applications which are considered at their quarterly trustee meetings.

The trustees include members of the bar, solicitors, and representatives from the University of Manchester, ILEX, and the voluntary sector: Stephen Knapp (7 Harrington Street Chambers), Neil Allen (Young Street Chambers), Joanne Bell (Beachcroft), Nigel Day (Hague-Lambert Solicitors), Paul Rose (Halliwells), Anne-Marie Dhillon (ILEX), Cathy Gallagher (Law Centres Federation), Rebecca Sheldon (LawWorks) and Sarah Harris (Personal Support Unit). Dinah Crystal (University of Manchester) is Chairman of the Trust, and His Honour Judge Richard Holman, Designated Civil Judge for Manchester, has been appointed Patron.

To raise funds, the Trust organised the Second Annual Manchester Legal Sponsored Walk. Last year, almost 500 nimble-footed lawyers, judges, law students, charity workers and their colleagues, family and friends, took part in the inaugural Manchester Walk and raised just under £30,000. This year’s walk took place on 24th September 2009. For more details, e-mail manchesterlegalwalk@lawworks.org.uk.
