Midland Legal Support Trust
The Midland Legal Support Trust is a registered Charity and Company limited by guarantee that has been established to give financial and other support to charities and advice agencies in the Midlands that provide free legal advice. The aim of the Trust is to enhance the availability of access to these services in the Midlands by raising funds, principally through an annual 10k legal walk.
Already the Trust has received high levels of support from the legal community in the Midlands. This was illustrated by the reception on 14 May 2009 to officially launch the Trust which was sponsored by Anthony Collins Solicitors, DLA Piper, Eversheds, Hammonds, Irwin Mitchell, Number 5 Chambers, Pinsent Masons, St Philips and Wragge & Co.
The trustees include members of the judiciary, the bar, solicitors and representatives from the College of Law and ILEX; His Honour Judge McKenna, Pauline Hughes (Employment Tribunal Judge), Nicola Preston (Number 5 Chambers), Stephen Hart (DLA), Julia Jones (Anthony Collins Solicitors), Professor Bernadette Griffin (College of Law), Anne-Marie Dhillon (ILEX) and David Wild (recently retired senior partner from Eversheds). The Chairman of the Trust is Lance Ashworth QC, a barrister at St Philips Chambers in Birmingham.
In September 2008 the first 10k Midland legal walk took place, based on the hugely successful 10k London Legal Support Trust Walk. The Midland walk raised over £12,000. The walk attracted over 200 walkers from across the legal profession. The funds raised have been distributed to support a number of agencies in the voluntary sector, including a project to assist those individuals who face repossession of their homes.
In 2009 two legal walks were held to raise funds for the Midland Legal Support Trust, one in Birmingham and one in Nottingham. Both walks took place on 24 September 2009, and raised over £20,000 for free legal advice agencies in the Midlands.
10k Legal Walk in Birmingham & Nottingham - 17 May 2010
The 2008 and 2009 walks took place in September and we have been very fortunate with both the number of lawyers walking and the weather. The hugely successful London Legal Walk takes place on 17 May 2010 and we have decided that this year our legal walks will co-ordinate with this date. Please see the latest MLST Legal Walk Newsletter for further information.
